Ohtani Ware is a traditional form of Japanese pottery produced in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, with a history dating back over 240 years. It is especially known for its large-scale vessels, such as jars and water containers, which were historically used for storing indigo dye and water. One of its defining characteristics is its durability, achieved through thick clay construction and high-temperature firing techniques. The surface often features natural, rustic textures and distinctive patterns created by kiln effects and mineral interactions in the clay. A unique technique called “twisting wheel” forming allows artisans to create large, symmetrical pieces with the cooperation of multiple craftsmen. Today, Ohtani Ware is appreciated not only for its traditional roots but also for its modern applications, including tableware, flower vases, and decorative items.
